Book of the Day: Hello Groin by Beth Goobie

hello-groin.jpgHello, Groin is a unique book dealing with issues of censorship, being true to one’s self, and sexual orientation. Dylan and Joq are best friends and have been for years, but Dylan is starting to feel differently about Joq. What should she tell her boyfriend, Cam?

At the same time she is dealing with this internal conflict, the school librarian asks her to make a book display in the library display case. When the principal removes two of the book covers from her display, she decides to cover them with black paper, showing the books were censored. This simple act causes a lot of attention, escalating up to the press, causing much interest on the issues of book banning and intellectual freedom.

I didn’t enjoy this read but somewhere, at least three teens voted this a possible best book of the year. Ultimately, it is up to the teens to decide if it’s a great read or not.

Hello, Groin is a nominee for the Teens Top 10 List! To request this title, click here. If it’s your favorite, don’t forget to place your vote during Teen Read Week, October 14-20, 2007.
