Teens’ Top Nominee for 2008: Ironside by Holly Black

In Holly Black’s third book in her series (the first two are Tithe: A Modern Faery’s Tale and Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faery), Kaye the punk pixie changeling finds herself at odds with her boyfriend, Roiben, who has been crowned the new King of the Unseelie Faery Court. A curse separates Kaye and Roiben, and to break the curse, Kaye begins an impossible quest: to find a fairy who can tell a lie. As Kaye begins her quest, she finds herself entangled between Faeryland and her other life with her mother and grandmother in New York City. Kaye will have to decide whether or not to tell her mother who and what she really is. In order to make her choice, Kaye will have to come to terms once and for all with whom she truly is and where it is that she belongs and wants to make her life.

There is a power struggle brewing between Roiben’s Court and Queen Silariel and her Seelie Court. Riddles are given, promises made, kisses given and curses are released as the traps by which Silariel hopes to get Roiben to hand over his power and allegiance to her. Kaye finds herself the only one who can stop the pending war and death of Roiben, if she can only fulfill her quest and find a fairy who can speak a lie. One lie, one chance, one love. But can she?
