Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkatraman

This novel is a retelling of Cinderella, except its set in India. Vadya is a young girl growing up during WWII in India. As India is seeking to gain Independence from Great Britain riots break out as the civilians rebel. Vadya’s father is a victim during one of those attacks and he suffers a brain injury that leaves him disabled. Forced to leave their home and live with their relatives, Vadya experiences hatred among the other female kin. They expect her to be focused on marrying a man and not so much on an education which will be looked down upon by the husband and his family. She seeks solace in her grandfather’s library and meets a boy living with her relatives that she’s attracted to. When he proposes to her she’s forced to make the hard decision of marrying him or continuing her education. Read the book to find out her choice.
