Teens’ Top Ten 2010: Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson is one of the Teens’ Top Ten Nominations for 2010.

Lia, 18, and her best friend had a falling out, but she is scared and struggling to come to terms with Cassie’s death from bulimia.  Cassie was trying to reach her the night she died, and Lia has no idea why.  Elijah, who worked at the hotel where Cassie died, might have a piece of the mystery, if Lia can bring herself to talk him.

Lia is also struggling to hide her own anorexia from her family.  Her days are taken up with counting the calories her family forces her to eat and ignoring their desperation at her ever-decreasing weight.  Her mother, a doctor, treats her coldly, like a patient, and her father and stepmother won’t understand that when she gets her weight down to 90 pounds, she will finally be happy.  Her little sister, Emma, is her only joy in life – is it fair for Emma to witness Lia’s mental and physical decline?
