Teens’ Top Ten 2010: Fire by Kristin Cashore

Fire by Kristin Cashore is one of the Teens’ Top Ten Nominations for 2010.

Seventeen-year-old Fire is a monster. Well, half-monster, half-human to be precise. In the land of the Dells, monsters are magical beautiful creatures that have the power to control the minds and wills of those around them. Fire’s monster blood makes her gorgeous and powerful, but she does not wish to use her powers for ill. However, as war sweeps through the Dells, she finds that she may not have a choice in the matter. Fire is called to the palace of King Nash to use her powers to fight against invading kingdoms. Unwillingly, she gets caught up in palace intrigue and struggles to define the lengths she’ll go to protect the land she loves.
This book is a prequel to Kristin Cashore’s fabulous book Graceling. I loved Graceling, yet I loved Fire more. Fire is a wonderfully complex story with a little bit of everything – battle scenes, an appreciation for music, some complicated friendships, and one of the best romances I’ve read in a long time.
