Into music? Ever considered Mandopop? Mandopop is simply just what its name suggests — it’s Mandarin popular music.
One of the most famous Mandopop artists is Teresa Teng, or 邓丽君. Some of her more noted songs contain 我只在乎你, 小城故事, and 我一见你就笑. My parents even listened to those in their teenage days 🙂 Today, some of the famous Mandopop artists are Jay Chou 周杰伦, Jolin Tsai 蔡依琳, and the example I give below, Wang Leehom 王力宏. You can listen to some on Youtube, that’s where I usually watch MVs and listen to new songs. Personally, I prefer JJ Lin 林俊杰, Jerry Yan 言承旭, and Jinsha 金沙. But as always, opinions differ. I’d love to hear yours :]
One cool aspect of Mandopop is that it sometimes contain a bit of ancient Chinese music. Jay Chou and Wang Leehom use this technique occasionally, and I’ve even heard JJ Lin use it in a song or two. This only goes to increase Mandopop’s popularity.
If you’re into Mandopop like I am, this is a GREAT site for checking out new releases and searching up old songs. If you haven’t listened to any types of Mandopop…give it a try.
You can also sign up to get emails whenever they make a new post, making it easier to keep up to date with hot new hits and albums from your favorite Asian artists.
In the image above, you can see how easy this website is to use. First, you can find your favorite artists by searching in the “labels” section. Once you click on their name (I clicked on Wang Leehom 王力宏 in this example), it will bring you to a page with all the posts on the artist, from newest to oldest. Each album contains the name, album cover, a little comment on the album, and a complete listing of the tracks. Sometimes there are even lyrics. If you scroll down even more, there are also other albums by the same artist, as you can see by the red arrow pointing to the three white boxes on the bottom right of the image.
