Movie: Mamma Mia!

Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is about to get married to her fiance, Sky, but she wants two more things: 1) to have a big white wedding on a romantic island; and 2) to have her father give her away. She has no idea who her father is since her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep), never got married, but after ransacking the attic, she finds her mother’s old diary. Inside are listed the names of three men that could possibly be her father: Sam Carmichael, Bill Andersson, and Harry Bright. Unknown to her mother, she invites all three to her wedding.

Sophie is convinced that she’ll know her father on sight and that “everything will fall into place” from then on, but when the three men arrive together, she becomes even more confused. Which man is her father? And what will happen when her mother finds out that they are on the island?

This movie is based on the hit musical Mamma Mia! with songs from ABBA such as “Super Trooper”, “SOS”, and “Mamma

Rosie: "Typical, isn't it? You wait twenty years for a dad and then three come along at once."

Mia”. The songs were addicting…and now I can’t walk around the house without hearing my mother humming “Dancing Queen” or my sister singing “The Winner Takes It All”. The only problem with the songs was Pierce Brosnan’s (Sam Carmichael) voice (which sounded remarkably like the kind of sounds a rhino makes). But on the other hand, the acting was good, and I especially enjoyed the part where Rosie (played by Julie Walters), while singing “Dancing Queen”, does the Elvis imitation 🙂

Sam (referring to the song "Super Trooper): "Our song!" Harry: "Your song?" Bill: "It's my song!"

I’ve never watched the musical, so the ending was a dramatic surprise to me. Overall, I thought it was okay, though I’m not a sucker for musicals. 3/5 stars. Enjoy!
