Book Review: The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud

bartimaeus   Review by Benjamin, grade 9
Nathaniel is a young, amateur magician trying to gain control of the magician government of Great Britain and take revenge against his adversary Simon Lovelace. Nathaniel summons Bartimaeus, a powerful, old, and sarcastic djinn to steal a powerful artifact from popular Simon Lovelace and unwittingly sets himself up for a wild adventure.

This book would appeal to Harry Potter fans. Although there are common elements in both books, the plot parallels only go so far. The witty author footnotes and a humorous, cantankerous demon will definitely make you laugh. This adventure is filled with elements of danger and betrayal as Nathaniel careens around the streets of London. The book is a very well-written fantasy that will compel you to read the sequels. Children from 12-15 would like this book. You can request the book from Wake County Libraries.
