Teens’ Top Ten Nominee for 2008: Penelope by Marilyn Kaye

September 15, 2008

(adapted from the screenplay by Leslie Caveny)

A modern day Beauty and the Beast story, in reverse. Penelope is a young woman who has wealth and luxury at her beck and call. She also has a pig snout for a nose thanks to an age-old family curse. Only a blue-blooded aristocrat can break the curse, so Penelope’s mother hires a professional matchmaker to find a prince for Penelope.

A slimy reporter who is hoping to strike it rich by publishing photos of the ‘pig girl’, devises a scheme to get what he wants. He hires Max, an aristocrat in dire financial straits, to pose as a potential suitor.

Meanwhile, tired of the constant parade of blue-blooded potential mates, Penelope strikes out on her own – eager to be free and discover the outside world. Will Penelope be exposed to the media? Will she ever find her prince and true happiness? Read this romantic comedy in fairy tale clothing to find out.

Penelope is a nominee for the 2008 Teens’ Top Ten. To read more about the Teens’ Top Ten program, click here. To request this book from the library, click here. And don’t forget to place your vote during Teen Read Week, October 12-18, 2008.
